You know a war is going great when the Pentagon starts robbing its own sailors to pay for it.
The Guardian dropped a bomb yesterday, and for once it wasn't one of ours. According to internal documents and interviews with Navy officials, contractors and defence analysts, Trump's war on Iran has driven the US military into a full-blown financial crisis. The Navy is quietly transferring funds from payroll accounts to cover combat costs. A Pentagon memo, seen by the Guardian, warns of "shortfalls in payroll" because the department has been "raiding" those accounts to keep the war machine running.
Raiding. Their word, not mine. The Pentagon is describing itself the way cops describe a guy who broke into a Best Buy.
One Navy official laid out the shell game in plain English: "The money for payroll was robbed to pay for overseas contingencies and is being backfilled by money that hasn't been spent. They are backfilling payroll so we get enough money in our paycheck."
Robbed. Backfilled. These are the words of a functioning superpower, apparently. It's the military version of paying your Visa with your Mastercard while telling your wife everything's fine.
How We Got Here
Trump launched this thing on February 28. Six months later, the scoreboard reads like a fire sale. Munitions stockpiles depleted. Iranian retaliatory strikes have wrecked strategic US bases across the Middle East. The Navy's entire 2026 budget, nearly $300 billion, was built by Congress with specific buckets for personnel, shipbuilding, weapons and day-to-day operations, and the law limits how much you can shuffle between them. So the Pentagon started shuffling anyway, in what officials charmingly call "imaginative" ways.
Pete Hegseth told Congress in April the war would cost about $25 billion. By July, his number was north of $35 billion. NBC reported that the Pentagon's internal estimate is actually $80 to $100 billion once you count repairs to wrecked bases, replacement of destroyed aircraft, and restocking the weapons they've burned through. The administration has asked Congress for $67 billion in emergency funding, and that request is currently stalled because even Republicans are getting squirmy about writing blank cheques for a war with no endgame that Americans increasingly hate.
Meanwhile, non-emergency maintenance at shore facilities has been quietly deferred. That's the polite way of saying the Navy stopped fixing things it can't afford to fix.
The Quotes Tell You Everything
Harlan Ullman, a retired naval officer who sits on the National Commission for the Future of the Navy, put it simply: "The piggy bank is broken."
Todd Harrison, a defence analyst at the American Enterprise Institute, which is about as far from a liberal think tank as you can get, says the Pentagon's silence is deliberate: "They're just not speaking publicly about it. And I suspect that is a deliberate decision of the civilian leaders in the Pentagon, starting at the secretary, that this is for political reasons, that they don't want to look like they're damaging future military readiness over a war that is becoming a political liability increasingly."
And my personal favourite, from a former military officer now working for a Navy contractor, briefed on the shortfalls, describing the state of the Navy in two words: "They're f-----."
The Guardian censored it. I wouldn't have.
The Navy's official response? A spokesman said they are "actively managing resources to meet current pay obligations on time" and working closely with Congress. Translation: the cheques haven't bounced yet, please stop asking questions.
Why This Matters
This is the party of Support The Troops literally taking money out of the accounts that pay the troops. Eighteen Americans dead, more than 430 wounded, zero oversight hearings, and now the sailors doing the actual fighting are having their payroll accounts strip mined so the guy who started this can keep it going.

You know a war is going great when the Pentagon starts robbing its own sailors to pay for it.
The Guardian dropped a bomb yesterday, and for once it wasn't one of ours. According to internal documents and interviews with Navy officials, contractors and defence analysts, Trump's war on Iran has driven the US military into a full-blown financial crisis. The Navy is quietly transferring funds from payroll accounts to cover combat costs. A Pentagon memo, seen by the Guardian, warns of "shortfalls in payroll" because the department has been "raiding" those accounts to keep the war machine running.
Raiding. Their word, not mine. The Pentagon is describing itself the way cops describe a guy who broke into a Best Buy.
One Navy official laid out the shell game in plain English: "The money for payroll was robbed to pay for overseas contingencies and is being backfilled by money that hasn't been spent. They are backfilling payroll so we get enough money in our paycheck."
Robbed. Backfilled. These are the words of a functioning superpower, apparently. It's the military version of paying your Visa with your Mastercard while telling your wife everything's fine.
How We Got Here
Trump launched this thing on February 28. Six months later, the scoreboard reads like a fire sale. Munitions stockpiles depleted. Iranian retaliatory strikes have wrecked strategic US bases across the Middle East. The Navy's entire 2026 budget, nearly $300 billion, was built by Congress with specific buckets for personnel, shipbuilding, weapons and day-to-day operations, and the law limits how much you can shuffle between them. So the Pentagon started shuffling anyway, in what officials charmingly call "imaginative" ways.
Pete Hegseth told Congress in April the war would cost about $25 billion. By July, his number was north of $35 billion. NBC reported that the Pentagon's internal estimate is actually $80 to $100 billion once you count repairs to wrecked bases, replacement of destroyed aircraft, and restocking the weapons they've burned through. The administration has asked Congress for $67 billion in emergency funding, and that request is currently stalled because even Republicans are getting squirmy about writing blank cheques for a war with no endgame that Americans increasingly hate.
Meanwhile, non-emergency maintenance at shore facilities has been quietly deferred. That's the polite way of saying the Navy stopped fixing things it can't afford to fix.
The Quotes Tell You Everything
Harlan Ullman, a retired naval officer who sits on the National Commission for the Future of the Navy, put it simply: "The piggy bank is broken."
Todd Harrison, a defence analyst at the American Enterprise Institute, which is about as far from a liberal think tank as you can get, says the Pentagon's silence is deliberate: "They're just not speaking publicly about it. And I suspect that is a deliberate decision of the civilian leaders in the Pentagon, starting at the secretary, that this is for political reasons, that they don't want to look like they're damaging future military readiness over a war that is becoming a political liability increasingly."
And my personal favourite, from a former military officer now working for a Navy contractor, briefed on the shortfalls, describing the state of the Navy in two words: "They're f-----."
The Guardian censored it. I wouldn't have.
The Navy's official response? A spokesman said they are "actively managing resources to meet current pay obligations on time" and working closely with Congress. Translation: the cheques haven't bounced yet, please stop asking questions.
Why This Matters
This is the party of Support The Troops literally taking money out of the accounts that pay the troops. Eighteen Americans dead, more than 430 wounded, zero oversight hearings, and now the sailors doing the actual fighting are having their payroll accounts strip mined so the guy who started this can keep it going.

Today, the Department of State, in partnership with the Department of the Treasury, is announcing the designation of Autistici/Inventati as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.
Autistici/Inventati (A/I Collective) is an Italy-based extremist group that builds and operates the digital infrastructure for violent Antifa cells and other far-left militants across the world. A/I's cadre of radical hackers and tech developers provide a full spectrum of services – including encrypted chats and email, web hosting, secure video conferencing and streaming, anonymity shields, and a suite of other technological tools – to Marxist, anarchist, and other left-wing extremist groups in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. These tools are specifically designed to support the operations of far-left terrorist networks, built to enable them to organize, recruit, communicate, disseminate propaganda, share target information and tactics, and carry out violent attacks – all while remaining anonymous, untraceable, and beyond the reach of the law.
The A/I Collective exclusively offers its tools and services to radical left-wing actors and manually vets all potential users for ideological affinity before granting them access to its infrastructure. The group has become a key node in a transnational campaign by violent and criminal far-left networks to destabilize the United States and its partners across Europe, the Western Hemisphere, and beyond. It currently claims to host roughly 16,000 mailboxes, 1,500 websites, 5,500 mailing lists, and 10,000 "blogs" on its custom-built platform, which militants frequently use to disseminate target information, tactical manuals and techniques, and communiqués about recent attacks.
As a result of today's action, all property and interests in property of the designated entity that are subject to U.S. jurisdiction are blocked, and all U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with them. Financial institutions and other persons may risk exposure to sanctions for engaging in certain transactions or activities involving the designated entities, with prohibitions to include the making of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services by, to, or for the benefit of the designated entities. Engaging in certain transactions involving the designated entities may also risk the imposition of secondary sanctions on participating foreign financial institutions. Violations of U.S. sanctions may result in the imposition of civil or criminal penalties on U.S. and foreign persons.
Today's action is being taken pursuant to Executive Order 13224, as amended, which targets entities and persons for having materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, or technological support for, or goods and services to or in support of, an act of terrorism. This designation is part of a broader U.S. government effort to address the threat of transnational far-left terrorism.
A/I Collective's Support for Violent Far-Left Extremist Groups
The A/I Collective provides encrypted tools and services to numerous violent far-left extremist groups operating in the United States and around the world. Many of these groups have relied on the A/I Collective's digital infrastructure to plot or incite violent attacks, recruit others to engage in criminal activity, publish official communiqués by U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organizations, and disseminate maps of critical infrastructure, along with instructions for building improvised explosive and incendiary devices – all routed through a network of foreign servers intended to conceal criminal activity from law enforcement.
The anarchist cells responsible for sabotaging rail systems across France, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands in 2026, relied on A/I Collective tools and services to claim responsibility for the attacks, publish official communiqués, and disseminate manuals for constructing improvised incendiary devices to target railways and other critical infrastructure.
The anarchist cell responsible for sabotaging the Transalpine Pipeline (TAL) in March 2026, which temporarily halted crude oil flows to Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic, relied on A/I Collective tools and services to claim responsibility for the attack and publish official communiqués, as well as to disseminate a manifesto calling for additional attacks on critical infrastructure and referring adherents to another A/I Collective platform, which provides detailed sabotage manuals as well as maps of vulnerable critical infrastructure across North America.
The far-left extremist network responsible for multiple arson attacks and acts of sabotage against Germany's rail and energy infrastructure between 2011 and 2026, including a January 2026 attack on Berlin's power grid that cut power to 45,000 households and resulted in a fatality, relied on A/I Collective tools and services to claim responsibility for attacks, publish official communiques, and disseminate a manifesto calling for additional attacks on energy infrastructure worldwide.
A far-left extremist media group claiming to be a "tool" for global militants to share "essential information" to be "acted upon," relies on A/I Collective tools and services to publish official communiqués and calls to action for U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organizations such as Armed Proletarian Justice, Informal Anarchist Federation and International Revolutionary Front (FAI/FRI), the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hamas, Hizballah, National Liberation Army (ELN), New People's Army (NPA), Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense. This same group was recently cited in a federal criminal complaint against a domestic terrorist who was sentenced to 19 years in prison for targeting a federal building and police car with improvised explosive devices.
Oregon-based Rose City Antifa has relied on A/I Collective tools and services to organize and incite violent and criminal acts domestically, including an attack on Customs and Border Patrol helicopters that led to a federal indictment. Rose City Antifa also used A/I Collective tools and services to disseminate doxing lists and release illegally obtained personal information of Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with calls for targeted attacks on ICE agents in the streets and "in their homes."
The anarchist cell responsible for waging a violent campaign to prevent the construction of a law enforcement training center in Atlanta, Georgia, relied on A/I Collective tools and services to claim responsibility for violent attacks on law enforcement officers, disseminate doxing lists and illegally obtained private information, threaten government officials and business owners, and circulate instructions for making improvised explosive and incendiary devices to be used against government buildings and local businesses. The cell remains active and still uses A/I Collective tools and services to incite violent and criminal acts against government officials, law enforcement, and critical infrastructure.
The violent far-left extremists, "Jane's Revenge," who waged a firebombing campaign against crisis pregnancy centers across the United States, relied on A/I Collective tools and services to publish official communiqués and claims of responsibility for violent and criminal acts and to incite copycat attacks. Four members of the group were later charged for violating federal law and engaging in a "conspiracy against rights" through threats of force and intimidation.

Die "Autistici/Inventati" sind EINE Gruppe unter zigtausenden. EINE Gruppe. Wo die ist, ist auch nicht sicher. Möglicherweise in Italien.
Das Problem: In Italien haben die USA nichts zu melden. Die USA können tausend Mal sagen, daß die "Autistici/Inventati" Terroristen sind. Sie können es auch zehntausend Mal sagen. Die Rechtsprechung Italiens ist die Rechtsprechung Italiens - und die USA haben dort nichts zu melden.

16.000 Mailboxen? Das glaube ich nicht. Es sind eher 16.000 Email-Accounts in irgendwelchen Servern irgendwo.
1.500 Web-Sites? Das kann schon sein. Aber so viel ist das auch nicht. Wenn 150 Leute je 10 Sites irgendwo installiert haben, dann sind das 1500 Verzeichnisse und Unterverzeichnisse in irgendwelchen Servern. Auch nicht sehr aufregend.
5.500 Mailing-Listen? Na gut, so eine Mailing-Liste wird installiert. Und dann? Dann werfen irgendwelche Leute irgendwelche Emails rein, die dann irgendwo ankommen. Und wo soll das sein? Wahrscheinlich bei den 16.000 Email-Accounts. Denn die hat man NICHT bei sich zuhause, sondern sicherheitshalber auf den anonymen Servern untergebracht.
Und dann noch 10.000 "Blogs" - was auch nichts anderes ist als Konstrukte in irgendwelchen Unterverzeichnissen in irgendwelchen Servern. Wobei die durchaus in Echtzeit läufen können und wie ein Chat betrieben werden können.
Unter'm Strich also zwischen 150 und 5500 Personen, die einen Internet-Wald mit vielen Zweigen und Blättern und viel Laubgeraschel betreiben.
Daß diese Server und diese Sites sich in den USA befinden, ist nicht anzunehmen. Es gibt nämlich seit dem 26. Oktober 2001 (!), also seit 25 Jahren, den "Patriot Act".
Die Google-KI sagt:
"Das Gesetz wurde als direkte Reaktion auf die Terroranschläge vom 11. September 2001 vom US-Kongress verabschiedet und von Präsident George W. Bush unterzeichnet. "
Per Patriot Act darf die USA in ALLE Daten hineinsehen, die sich auf US-amerikanischen Servern befinden. Wer Web-Space gemietet hat, und der befindet sich, aus welchen perversen Gründen auch immer, auf Servern in den USA, kann sich also sicher sein, daß die USA diese Daten lesen. Von A bis Z, alles, vom ersten bis zum letzten Buchstaben. Mein Web-Space in den USA ist für die US-Behörden ein offenes Buch. Ich weiß das mit Brief und Siegel, seit es den Patriot Act gibt. Und davor wußte ich es auch schon. Das gehört nun mal zum Handwerkszeug. Es ist nun mal so und es stört mich nicht, nicht das kleinste bißchen.
Ich werde bereits seit 1972, seit Beginn meines Studiums von Geheimdiensten überwacht, von Stasi und KGB und Nachfolgern über die Bundeswehr- und MAD-Abteilungen und Verfassungsschutz bis hin zum Mossad. (Seid alle gegrüßt.) Es ist nun mal so. Damit muß man leben. Es interessiert mich nicht die Bohne. In dem Moment, wo man an eine Universität kommt, wo es politische Agitation gibt, ist das so. So ist das Leben.
Die "Autistici/Inventati" sind nicht so dumm, sich auf US-amerikanischen Servern niederzulassen. Das brauchen sie auch nicht. Die Erde ist groß genug.

Die amerikanischen Geheimdienste würden sich artig dafür bedanken, für so dumm und faul erklärt zu werden.

Aber genau DAS ist das Problem!: Wie sollen die Bürger amtsunfähige Figuren aus der Politik entfernen, wenn es keine wählbaren Alternativ-Kandidaten gibt? Die deutsche Politik ist ein Vakuum. Noch leerer als leer. Es herrscht geistiger Unterdruck - und man ist immer wieder erstaunt, wieviel Vakuum in so kleinen Hirnen Platz hat. Deutschland, das Land der Rekorde, hier ist alles möglich...

Autistici/Inventati (A/I Collective) is an Italy-based extremist group that builds and operates the digital infrastructure for violent Antifa cells and other far-left militants across the world. A/I's cadre of radical hackers and tech developers provide a full spectrum of services – including encrypted chats and email, web hosting, secure video conferencing and streaming, anonymity shields, and a suite of other technological tools – to Marxist, anarchist, and other left-wing extremist groups in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. These tools are specifically designed to support the operations of far-left terrorist networks, built to enable them to organize, recruit, communicate, disseminate propaganda, share target information and tactics, and carry out violent attacks – all while remaining anonymous, untraceable, and beyond the reach of the law.
The A/I Collective exclusively offers its tools and services to radical left-wing actors and manually vets all potential users for ideological affinity before granting them access to its infrastructure. The group has become a key node in a transnational campaign by violent and criminal far-left networks to destabilize the United States and its partners across Europe, the Western Hemisphere, and beyond. As a result of today's action, all property and interests in property of the designated entity that are subject to U.S. jurisdiction are blocked, and all U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with them. Financial institutions and other persons may risk exposure to sanctions for engaging in certain transactions or activities involving the designated entities, with prohibitions to include the making of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services by, to, or for the benefit of the designated entities. Engaging in certain transactions involving the designated entities may also risk the imposition of secondary sanctions on participating foreign financial institutions. Violations of U.S. sanctions may result in the imposition of civil or criminal penalties on U.S. and foreign persons.
Today's action is being taken pursuant to Executive Order 13224, as amended, which targets entities and persons for having materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, or technological support for, or goods and services to or in support of, an act of terrorism. A/I Collective's Support for Violent Far-Left Extremist Groups
The A/I Collective provides encrypted tools and services to numerous violent far-left extremist groups operating in the United States and around the world. Many of these groups have relied on the A/I Collective's digital infrastructure to plot or incite violent attacks, recruit others to engage in criminal activity, publish official communiqués by U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organizations, and disseminate maps of critical infrastructure, along with instructions for building improvised explosive and incendiary devices – all routed through a network of foreign servers intended to conceal criminal activity from law enforcement.
The anarchist cells responsible for sabotaging rail systems across France, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands in 2026, relied on A/I Collective tools and services to claim responsibility for the attacks, publish official communiqués, and disseminate manuals for constructing improvised incendiary devices to target railways and other critical infrastructure.

Uitzichtloos lijden is voor steeds meer postcovidpatiënten een reden om voor euthanasie te kiezen. Vorig jaar ging het om tien patiënten. Ook Kelvin (23) heeft een euthanasietraject afgerond. "Ik wil niet dood, maar het lijden kan te veel worden."
Kelvin Latta (23) is een schim van de sportieve jongen die hij ooit was. "Daar is eigenlijk niks meer van over. Stuk voor stuk ben ik alles kwijtgeraakt, alles is afgebrokkeld. Nu is er eigenlijk niks meer over van wie ik ooit was."
Een donkere kamer
Voor hij ziek werd had Kelvin alles: een goede baan bij de politie, net een nieuwe auto en hij sportte zes keer per week. 2,5 jaar geleden sloeg het noodlot toe. Hij kreeg corona en werd ontzettend ziek. "Op een gegeven moment takelde mijn lichaam steeds verder af. Ik kon niet meer de trap op." Het werd zo erg dat hij nu de hele dag in een half donkere kamer ligt, want prikkels kan hij niet verdragen.
Net als Kelvin lijden steeds meer patiënten die de ziekte postcovid hebben zo erg dat euthanasie de enige uitweg is die ze nog zien. Dit blijkt uit cijfers die EenVandaag heeft opgevraagd bij de Regionale Toetsingscommissies Euthanasie (RTE's). In de jaren van 2022 tot en met 2024 kozen nog negen patiënten voor deze optie, in 2025 lag dit aantal in 1 jaar tijd al op tien.

Alleen maar liggen
Al meer dan 2 jaar is Kelvin volledig afhankelijk van de zorg van zijn moeder. We kunnen hem alleen liggend interviewen. Als hij opstaat, dan wordt hij zo duizelig dat hij flauwvalt. Hij kan zich alleen per rolstoel verplaatsen, bijvoorbeeld als hij naar de wc moet.
Voor de rest kan hij alleen maar op bed liggen en soms, op goede dagen, een audioboek luisteren. Kelvin: "Het is één en al verlies. Ik word elke dag weer geconfronteerd met wat ik allemaal niet meer kan. Er is niks meer om naar uit te kijken. Dat voelt eindeloos."
Onzichtbaar voor maatschappij
Kelvin heeft het idee dat hij onzichtbaar is geworden voor de maatschappij. "Ik heb het gevoel dat ik levend begraven ben, dat ik ook vergeten ben daardoor. Een soort van verdwenen. 'Niemand wil dood'
Jojanneke Kant is huisarts en kent vanuit haar praktijk veel postcovidpatiënten. Ze begrijpt waarom patiënten euthanasie soms als enige uitweg zien. Kant: "Een van mijn patiënten zegt: 'Ik voel me soms gewoon een levende dode.' Het ziektebeeld is zo heftig. Alleen dat kan al genoeg reden zijn voor euthanasie, kan ik me voorstellen als arts."
"Kijk, niemand wil dood. Deze mensen willen niet dood. Alleen ze kunnen niet meer verder met leven. En dat is echt een wezenlijk verschil." Kant snapt dan ook dat patiënten zoals Kelvin hun leven als uitzichtloos ervaren. "Deze mensen zijn al zo lang zo ernstig ziek. Zij zien op een gegeven moment simpelweg geen alternatief meer."
Hoeveel postcovidpatiënten zijn er?
Dit is een vraag die eigenlijk niet te beantwoorden is. In Nederland wordt er namelijk geen officiële registratie bijgehouden van het aantal postcovidpatiënten. Het meest betrouwbare cijfer dat bestaat is gebaseerd op een cijfer uit Engeland. Als je dat naar Nederland vertaalt kom je op een groep van ongeveer 400.000 postcovidpatiënten. Van deze groep hebben 90.000 patiënten ernstige klachten.
Hoe groot de groep van patiënten is die volledig aan bed is gekluisterd, zoals Kelvin, is niet te zeggen. Medisch adviseur van C-support Alfons Olde Loohuis denkt dat het om rond de 5.000 patiënten gaat. Maar exacte aantallen zijn er dus niet.
Geen kwaliteit van leven
Kant gaat verder: "Als je alleen maar op bed ligt, je niet kunt lezen, je geen film kunt kijken, je met niemand kunt praten. Dan lig je alleen maar op bed te wachten totdat de dag voorbij gaat. Dan heb je geen enkele kwaliteit van leven meer. Die kwaliteit is nul, eigenlijk nog lager dan nul."

De huisarts vindt dat het hier ook een maatschappelijke kwestie gaat. Vanaf 1 januari volgend jaar houdt expertisecentrum C-support op te bestaan, omdat het kabinet de subsidie staakt. Dit heeft grote invloed op patiënten, zegt Kant. "Ik vind dat we deze mensen afschrijven, ik kan het niet anders zeggen. Als je ziet dat expertisecentra de deuren moeten sluiten en hoe weinig langdurig onderzoek er naar de klachten van deze patiënten wordt gedaan, dan snap ik heel erg dat patiënten zich in de steek gelaten voelen.
