Im Newsletter des "Laborjournal", meines Lieblingsmagazins seit mehr als 2 Jahrzehnten, kann man heute lesen:

Dann ging es an die Wissenschaft und an das Gesundheitssystem. Nur einige Beispiele:
* 1.300 Mitarbeiter des Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) wurden gefeuert.
* 1.500 Mitarbeiter des National Institute of Health (NIH) wurden entlassen.
* Vier Milliarden US-Dollar an Zuschüssen für Universitäten und Kliniken wurden gestrichen.
* Mehrere Bundesstaaten, darunter Idaho und Montana, gehen gegen mRNA-Impfstoffe vor.
* Forschungsergebnisse zur Vogelgrippe, zu COVID-19 und zum Klimawandel werden aus dem Internet entfernt. Werden diese Maßnahmen erfolgreich vor Gericht angefochten, erscheinen die Veröffentlichungen zwar wieder online, aber gekürzt oder mit Hinweisen wie ,,biologisch falsch".
* Gesundheitsforschung, die sich in irgendeiner Weise mit Minderheiten beschäftigt, wird unterbunden. Das geht nicht nur zu Lasten der LGBTQ+-Community – immerhin zählen sich neun Prozent der erwachsenen US-Amerikaner zu dieser Gruppe – sondern generell gegen Gleichberechtigung, Diversität und Inklusion. Und das sind beileibe keine woken Modeerscheinungen: So kostete die ethische Ungleichheit im Gesundheitssystem im Jahr 2018 mehr als 450 Milliarden US-Dollar – nicht zuletzt, weil die meisten Medikamente nur an weißen, männlichen Nichtrauchern getestet werden.
Die Folge: Forschende fühlen sich in ihrer Existenz bedroht, Selbstzensur setzt ein, die berühmte Schere im Kopf wächst. Viele denken ans Auswandern. Patrick Cramer, Präsident der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, sagte Anfang März 2025: ,,Wir sehen, dass wir doppelt so viele Bewerbungen aus den USA haben, und es ist auf jeden Fall eine große Chance für den Forschungsstandort Europa, weil wir eben auf einmal Talente rekrutieren können, die wir unter normalen Umständen so nicht hätten gewinnen können. Aber für die Forschung insgesamt, für die Wissenschaft insgesamt auf der Welt ist es ein ganz klarer Rückschritt, etwas, was mir ganz große Sorgen bereitet."
Der Welt werden wichtige Daten fehlen, beispielsweise für die Klimaforschung und die Wettervorhersage. Das Klima schert sich nicht um Ländergrenzen. Auch Pandemien heißen so, weil sie keine Grenzen kennen. Aber auch die Krebs- und die Alzheimerforschung sind bedroht. Insgesamt 27 Prozent der weltweiten Forschung findet in den USA statt. Noch.
Zwar formiert sich Widerstand unter den US-Forschern, doch wirkt dieser momentan lächerlich klein angesichts der Walze an Repression, die über die Forschungsgemeinde rollt.
