Joel M. Eichen, DDS, has gone

There are not many people I respect on this planet. Joel Eichen is one of them.

I met him in Usenet, long ago, where he and other dentists were active in newsgroups about dentistry. And I was there because I researched and wrote about dental amalgam fillings. So a confrontation was inevitable --- because he was a hardcore PRO amalgam guy, and I fought against amalgam.

Joel Eichen was quite stubborn, but a decent fellow, and quite witty, see his signature:

I learned a lot from him --- not by him telling me this or that (he was a good teacher), but by observing WHAT he did and what he wrote. Really, he was one of the motors and a soul of sci.med.dentistry, he brought life to it, he kept it alive. And I learned by observing how he did it.

At some time, about 20 years ago, he retired from Usenet, the reason he did not tell, and kept on his dental office.

Today I saw his obituary.
