An update from Jason Arday

Dear colleagues,

It is with profound sadness that I write to resign, with immediate effect, from my position at the University of Cambridge and Jesus College.

When I accepted the extraordinary honour of becoming Professor of Sociology at Cambridge, it was, without question, the greatest professional privilege of my life. To become the youngest Black professor in the University's history was something I could scarcely have imagined as a child growing up with a diagnosis of autism, unable to speak until I was eleven years old.

The response from so many people across the world was overwhelming. Thousands celebrated not simply my appointment, but what it represented: that talent, perseverance and hope can triumph over even the greatest adversity. It has been the privilege of my life to teach my students, to learn alongside them, and to witness their curiosity, kindness and ambition. They have given me far more than I could ever have given them.

Sadly, the years since my appointment have also been marked by an unrelenting level of public scrutiny and personal attack. While criticism is an inevitable part of academic life, what I have experienced has gone far beyond scholarly disagreement. The relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary have taken a profound toll on me and on those I love.

I have tried to continue because I believe deeply in the values of higher education, in rigorous scholarship, and in the transformative power of universities. I have tried because of my students, my colleagues and the countless people who have written to tell me that my journey gave them hope.

But there comes a point when the personal cost becomes too great.

I have a family. I want to be present for them. I want to reclaim some peace, some privacy and some semblance of an ordinary life. I no longer wish to feel as though I am living under a constant spotlight, where every aspect of my life is subject to public examination and judgement.

For my own wellbeing, for my family, and for those who have stood by me throughout this difficult period, I have concluded that the only way to bring this chapter to an end is to step away.

This decision should not be interpreted as a loss of faith in scholarship or in the values that first brought me to Cambridge. Nor should it be mistaken for an acceptance of the narratives that have surrounded me. It is simply the decision of someone who has reached the limits of what any person should reasonably be expected to endure.

To my students: thank you. Teaching you has been the greatest honour of my academic career. Your brilliance, compassion and determination give me enormous hope for the future.

To my colleagues and to the many thousands of people, from every corner of the world, who have supported me, defended me, written to me, and believed in me when it mattered most, I offer my deepest gratitude. Your kindness has carried me through some of the darkest moments of my life.

This is not the end of my work. It is simply the end of this chapter.

I need time to heal. I need time to simply be  myself again.

And when that time comes, I will return.

I will return stronger, wiser and with the same determination that has always defined my journey. There is still so much work to do, and I look forward to doing it alongside so many of you in the years ahead.

For now, however, I ask only for understanding, for compassion, and for the space to begin again.

Und weil dem eben so ist, bin ich mir sicher: ich hätten diesen clownesken Professor für "Bildungssoziologie" (ausgerechnet!) bereits nach wenigen Minuten restlos als Hochstapler durchschaut.
Dabei halte ich mich übrigens gar nicht – das ist das eigentlich Frappierende – für so viel klüger als der Rest der Menschheit oder jedenfalls die Universität Cambridge. Sondern ich bin mir sicher, daß wenigstens 50% der Leute, die regelmäßig mit diesem Jason Arday zu tun hatten (vermutlich noch deutlich mehr!) ebenfalls sofort bemerken, daß diese groteske Gestalt ein Blender war, und zwar ein ziemlich ungeschickter (weil er eben alles so maßlos übertrieb!).

Wenn ein Laie, der in Wahrheit nie ein Buch gelesen hat, schon gar kein Fachbuch, versucht, irgendwie mit pompöser Sprache einen "Wissenschaftler" darzustellen, dann funktioniert das nur gegenüber Leuten, die selbst keine Ahnung haben. Begegnet er einem richtigen Wissenschaftler, zumal einem, der das selbe Fach vertritt, das der Hochstapler sich anmaßt – dann merkt der sofort, daß der andere von wesentlichen Standardwerken, von wichtigen Vertretern des Faches im In- und Ausland, von den derzeit überall diskutierten Gegenwartsfragen des Faches in Wahrheit noch nie gehört hat!

Und deswegen ist dieser Jason Arday eben nicht der "Hauptmann von Köpenick" der Gegenwart oder jedenfalls des (angelsächsischen) akademischen Systems. Aber gerade der Vergleich mit dem "Hauptmann von Köpenick" (1906) macht die Unterschiede zwischen "damals" und "heute" deutlich. Der Hauptmann von Köpenick war eben nur deswegen erfolgreich, weil seine Darstellung so glaubhaft war, daß niemand Zweifel an seiner "Echtheit" hegte. Sonst hätte es nie geklappt!

Bei Jason Arday haben hingegen haben ohne Zweifel hunderte von Menschen, darunter zahlreiche international bekannte und anerkannte Berufsakademiker, sofort durchschaut, daß er ein bildungsferner, eigentlich tölpelhafer Kokolores-Erzähler war – sie meinten nur, daß es dem eigenen Leben, der eigenen Karriere keine Wendung zum Besseren geben würde, wenn sie sich das anmerken ließen. In der Tat versuchte dieser Mensch ja noch, gegen den Professor, der ihn schließlich "enttarnte" (also das je schon Offensichtliche auch aussprach, wie im Märchen von Andersen, "Der König ist nackt!") mit Hilfe der britischen Polizei (!) noch eine Hexenjagd anzustacheln.

Der Vergleich des historischen "Hauptmanns von Köpenick" (der nur wenige Stunden als solcher agierte!) mit dem Fall dieses jahrelang "amtierenden" Professors ist bezeichnend. Die meisten Menschen glauben ja (oder beten es auf Nachfrage jederzeit vor!) daß die "Freiheit" des einzelnen, dessen Möglichkeiten, der Politik entgegenzutreten, heute unendlich größer sei als, sagen wir, im Jahre Jahre 1906.

In der Tat deutet dieser Fall jedoch darauf hin, daß Jahrzehnte der "Demokratisierung" bzw. "Fundamentliberalisierung" (ein Begriff, den Habermas geprägt hat!) die politische Freiheit des Individuums zum Verschwinden gebracht, in Angst vor Verfolgung, speziell medialer Nachstellung ersäuft haben.

Abstract
Replete with espoused discourses of equality, diversity and inclusion within public bodies, is the UK, wherein lauded initiatives reward its universities' commitments to increasing the access and positioning of 'women' in higher education. This paper contributes a critical quantitative analysis of the state of representation and participation of academic staff within these universities generally, and the majority-female discipline of education particularly. Education is important because it has a direct relation to social change and ethicality. It may maintain or reproduce the status quo; however, exercising its transformative potential is essential for the success of various international frameworks aiming to address global inequality, including most recently the Sustainable Development Goals. Sensitised by QuantCrit principles, a descriptive statistical exploration was undertaken of the staff composition and employment conditions captured within the administrative datasets reported on academic staff by all the public universities in the devolved nations of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales from 2015 to 2020. The findings of this study confirmed: (i) the continuation of gendered inequalities across the academic hierarchy, particularly as the pyramid narrows to the assigned intellectual leadership position of 'professor'; (ii) racialised, gendered inequalities in access to employment, and in positioning once employed; and (iii) more adverse conditions where gendered, racialised and geopolitical inequalities intersect, most extremely for Black African female academics. The study demonstrates that the centring of 'race' and consideration of nationality are required to challenge coloniality, and to bring to the fore the differential impacts of systems of discrimination within this globally influential sector.

The NUJ has responded to the death of Jason Arday, former Cambridge University professor.

Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary, said:

    "Jason Arday's death is desperately sad. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues and fellow trade unionists at this time.   

    "Arday has been the subject of intense media coverage and public discourse, and his death has caused deep concern and anger. It is appropriate that this strength of feeling is recognised and there should be a period of careful reflection. All media organisations should reflect on their coverage and we will be consulting our members for their views and experiences.

    "There has been significant criticism of the media, rooted in legitimate concerns over aspects of coverage. However it is important to recognise the role of journalists in keeping the public informed, and to avoid language that brands all media workers as unprofessional and unethical. We condemn attacks against individual journalists - including Black journalists - who have been targeted with threats, harassment or racial slurs following Arday's death. These attacks risk fuelling divisions and deepening the distress already felt by so many. No worker should be subject to abuse while doing their job. Employers must provide proper support and safeguarding to journalists affected.

    "The NUJ Code of Conduct is an ethical framework for journalists carrying out their work. The Code states that journalists should not produce 'material likely to lead to hatred or discrimination on the grounds of a person's age, gender, race, colour, creed, legal status, disability, marital status, or sexual orientation.' 

    "That one of the highest profile critics of Arday was Nathan Cofnas, a former Cambridge academic and self-described 'race realist', is deeply concerning. Racism, ableism and pernicious rhetoric against diversity, equity and inclusion has become increasingly normalised in our society. The NUJ vigorously opposes the rehabilitation of discredited ideas on race in academia, and emphasises the importance of journalistic verification - including checking the background and motivation of sources.   

    "The union will continue its long-running campaigns for ethical journalism - including strengthened independent regulation, better access to the industry, greater diversity in newsrooms, and reform of media ownership. Individual journalists must also have the power to object to unethical industry practices. Central to this is trade union recognition and the protection offered by collective agreements as well as the introduction of conscience clauses in staff and freelance contracts."

Any members who are affected or would like to share their views should contact the union.

I'd be surprised if it's only 60%. The sociology and adjacent fields are fertile grounds for DEI morons spewing out stupid word salad and ideologies to appear intelligent. They add negative value to society as a whole.

Jason Arday was famously proclaimed to be the finest in his academic field and neither the Sociology societies nor even a single sociologist loudly disputed that fact.

The best explanation is that the field lost its leading light.

I'm a postdoctoral researcher in philosophy at Stockholm University. I'm writing regarding Ghent University's suspension of Nathan Cofnas. I started DPhil in philosophy at the University of Oxford at the same time as Nathan, so I know him personally.

Jason Arday's death is a tragedy, and I know Nathan would never have wanted events to end this way. However, I also think Nathan was right to raise concerns about Arday's research and accomplishments. Arday clearly committed fraud and lied extensively. For example, several universities he claimed to be associated with have said they have no record of him.

As an academic, I want academia to maintain high standards. This is also important for maintaining public trust-I worry that the public is already turning against academia, as we have seen in the US. Suspending Nathan after he raised very reasonable concerns about Jason Arday's conduct sends a message that those who expose plagiarism and fraud will be punished and that academic standards and integrity are unimportant.

Nathan's views are controversial, and he is courageous to defend them. I understand that we do not want pseudoscientific ideas to be researched or taught at universities, but based on the evidence we have, Nathan's views are within the bounds of reasonable academic debate. I also understand that you are in a difficult situation, as you must be receiving many messages demanding that Nathan be fired. However, I ask you to uphold high academic standards and academic freedom. I therefore ask you to reconsider Nathan's suspension and allow him to continue his work at Ghent.
