Summary
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct interviews with individuals and families to assess and review their
requirements.
• Provide information and support.
• Liaise with, and make referrals to the right consultant.
• Provide all admin and secretarial work for Manchester Shariah Council (MSC)
• Maintain accurate records and handle all bookings for all consultants and
Manchester Shariah Council members.
• Plan, manage, organise and oversee all MSC social and Shariah services and
activities on a day to day basis.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

• Active listening: This entails listening, paying attention to and recording what
clients tell you while demonstrating this through appropriate body language
and responses.
• Boundary setting: The nature of the work means it is easy to get emotionally
involved in certain cases. Setting boundaries ensures that professional lines
are not crossed and keeps you focused on the end goal.
• Critical and creative thinking: Being able to think on your feet enables you to
make important decisions and referral complex problems based on your
knowledge, understanding and analysis of a case.
• Communication: The job entails communication with a variety of people in a
number of different ways, either by talking to clients face-to-face or over the
phone, presenting cases to consultants, or making written referrals. All
communication must be clear and articulate in order to be understood.
• Interpersonal skills: The Shariah Law Administrator is required to build good
relationships with clients. Therefore, it is crucial to be able to work with people
from all backgrounds.
• IT: Up-to-date and accurate records of all cases need to be kept along with a
substantial amount of paperwork that need to be completed, so proficiency with
computers is essential.
• Organisation: Organisational skills are vital since the Shariah Law
Administrator has to juggle a heavy caseload and liaise with others on a daily
basis.
• Resilience: The work is emotionally challenging and you will likely have to deal
with individuals and families in crisis on regular basis. Resilience and the ability
to look after your own emotional needs are imperative to succeeding in the job.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
• A Diploma/Degree in Shariah Law.
• Previous working experience in Shariah Law related fields and/or Shariah
Courts in Muslim countries.
• Familiarity with UK Law and/or Common Law.
• Experience working with families, children, women and the community.
• Fluent in English (essential).

WORKING HOURS

Monday-Saturday
10am-4pm (36 hours)

Labour has previously supported moves to restrict VPN usage when the Online Safety Act was first going through parliament. Prominent backbench MP Sarah Champion launched a campaign against them:

    "My new clause 54 would require the Secretary of State to publish, within six months of the Bill's passage, a report on the effect of VPN use on Ofcom's ability to enforce the requirements under clause 112. If VPNs cause significant issues, the Government must identify those issues and find solutions, rather than avoiding difficult problems."

Champion was supported by the Labour frontbench – the party said there were "gaps" in the bill that needed to be amended. Shadow digital minister Alex Davies-Jones said at the time that the clause "touches on the issue of future-proofing, which Labour has raised repeatedly in debates on the Bill." VPNs currently destroy the operation of the badly-designed legislation...

Under the terms of the act platforms are not allowed to promote VPNs as an alternative to ID checks. Labour will be minded to go much further. If China can't do it...

Ignazio Silone ▪ Spring 2025

Ignazio Silone, born Secondo Tranquilli in the Abruzzi region of Italy on May 1, 1900, was a founding member of the Italian Communist Party (PCI). He changed his name while in a Spanish prison, under arrest for his political activities. Charged with important tasks by the PCI, he traveled to Moscow for a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Communist International in May 1927. There, Joseph Stalin insisted that the EC condemn Leon Trotsky for treason based on a document that Stalin refused to make available to the members of the committee. When Silone naively asked to read the incriminating document, Stalin protested. Silone refused to condemn Trotsky without having seen the evidence, and Stalin insisted that if the motion to condemn was not unanimous, it would be withdrawn. A day later, Silone was astonished to read in the newspapers that the EC of the Comintern had "unanimously" condemned Trotsky. So began a long and painful process of disillusionment that was to end with Silone's expulsion from the Communist Party in 1931.

By then, he was living in exile in Switzerland. For some time, it seems, he had carried out an exchange of letters with Guido Bellone, a police official in Rome. Apparently, Silone, in an attempt to mitigate the condition of his younger brother, who had been languishing in fascist prisons since 1928 (and where he would die in October 1932), passed along to Bellone information concerning the clandestine organization of the PCI in Italy and abroad. Although there is no disputing Silone's authorship of some of the letters, there is still a question concerning how long this relationship went on (a "farewell" letter of April 1930 to Bellone mentions a period of ten years), how serious the damage to the PCI, and Silone's motives (at least two scholars have implied questionable sexual intrigue). Further muddying the waters is the curious fact that after Silone became a famous antifascist writer in the 1930s, he was never "outed" by the fascist regime (although documents indicate he was still being followed by fascist spies). The epistolary relationship raises more questions than it answers, but we do know that in an attempt to extricate himself from that base and humiliating relationship, he allowed himself to be expelled from the communist movement, thereby ending his relationship with Bellone, the fascist police, and the PCI.

In the summer of 1929, penniless, broken physically and spiritually, told by his doctors that he did not have long to live, and on the verge of suicide, Silone sat down to write a novel of his native town, "so at least to be able to die among my own people." The result was Fontamara, a tale of fascist repression and brutality, written in a deceptively simple style, that went on to be translated into twenty-seven languages and that was the most well-known work of antifascist literature of the 1930s and 1940s.

Silone remained in his Swiss exile...

4chan is a United States company, incorporated in Delaware, with no establishment, assets, or operations in the United Kingdom. Any attempt to impose or enforce a penalty against 4chan will be resisted in U.S. federal court.
American businesses do not surrender their First Amendment rights because a foreign bureaucrat sends them an e-mail. Under settled principles of U.S. law, American courts will not enforce foreign penal fines or censorship codes.
If necessary, we will seek appropriate relief in U.S. federal court to confirm these principles.
United States federal authorities have been briefed on this matter.
The Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, was reportedly warned by the White House to cease targeting Americans with U.K. censorship codes (according to reporting in the Telegraph on July 30th).
Despite these warnings, Ofcom continues its illegal campaign of harassment against American technology firms. A political solution to this matter is urgently required and that solution must come from the highest levels of American government.

The national governing body for sailing, which was founded in 1875, has suggested that it should instead be replaced with "person in water" in an inclusive language guide.

It is one of a number of recommendations issued by the RYA to use language that "honours and values" women and non-binary people within the sport and recreational activity.

The guide suggests that while "man overboard" is an important phrase to "raise the alarm where a person has fallen overboard to initiate the emergency procedures", outside of these situations the term "person in water" is recommended.

Critics said the language guidance was "balderdash" that would have seafarers and sailors from previous eras "turning in their graves".

Another term the RYA tells its members to avoid is "seamanship", with people told to use "boat handling", "navigation", "deck work" or "maintenance" as replacements.

The guide also recommends using the word "sporting behaviour" instead of "sportsmanship" as it "might not be comfortable for a person who recognises themselves to be a woman or non-binary".

The Princess Royal has been president of the RYA since 1987 and is also patron of the RYA Foundation, the association's charity created in 2013.

Princess Anne regularly visits sailing clubs across the UK to mark milestones, chairs almost every RYA annual general meeting, and shows her support for the British Sailing Team.

The RYA guide states: "Some language in sailing and boating environments might not value or represent people who identify as female or prefer gender-neutral terms.

"For a long time, some terminology focussed on the male perspective to being involved in sailing and boating.

"As the representation of people identifying as female or non-binary has increased within our sport and recreation, it's important that the language that we use honours and values them too."

It suggests that the "winchman" or "grinder" positions should be replaced with "person on the winch" or "winchperson", while the term "helm" should be used instead of "helmsman" to be inclusive.

The guide also advises against the traditional sailing term "mother duties", used to describe cooking and cleaning duties while on board. It says the phrase "suggests that it is a female mother's responsibility to cook and clean, when this is typically not the case", and recommends using the term "cooking and cleaning duties" instead.

Sir John Hayes, chairman of the Common Sense group of Conservative MPs, said: "Quite a large element of the privileged class, that is bewildered and befuddled by political correctness, has adopted this kind of brainless nonsense.

It comes as Spelthorne borough council came under fire for suggesting that the word "manpower" is an offensive term, with "staffing" suggested as an appropriate alternative.

City St George's, University of London, was also criticised for providing trigger warnings for "taboo" depictions of cannibalism in its vampire fiction module.

The RYA was contacted for comment.

Taiwan is an island in the South China Sea, around 100 miles off the coast of China, on which nearly 24 million people live. The Communist-controlled People's Republic of China, based on mainland China, considers Taiwan a breakaway province that must return to the mainland's control.

According to Taiwan's constitution its official name is the Republic of China. This is a remnant of a political entity formed on the Chinese mainland more than 100 years ago. The Republic of China does not officially recognise the People's Republic, and its constitution still asserts sovereignty over mainland China.

The People's Republic of China's 'One China' principle asserts that Taiwan is an integral part of China, and as part of this, that other countries must only maintain official diplomatic relations with itself. It also opposes Taiwan's participation in international organisations.

The UK, like most other countries, does not recognise Taiwan as a state, nor does it maintain formal diplomatic relations with the island.

This briefing looks at Taiwan's history and politics, membership of international organisations, and relationship with other states, including the UK.
Taiwan's politics and approach to the mainland

Taiwan was a military dictatorship for several decades, and martial law was imposed between 1949 and 1987. From that period through the 1990s Taiwan transitioned to democracy, holding its first direct presidential elections in 1996.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office describes Taiwan as a "stable, vibrant democracy with a free press and independent judiciary".

Taiwan's current President is Tsai Ing-wen, of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), her term ends in May 2024. Presidential and parliamentary elections were held in January 2024, and DPP candidate, current Vice President William Lai Ching-te, won the contest, a third consecutive victory for the DPP. The DPP did support declaring formal independence for Taiwan in the 1990s. But now, particularly under the leadership of Tsai Ing-wen, it supports the status-quo stating that Taiwan is already independent as the Republic of China (PDF). Lai is not expected to change this approach.

The other main political party, the Kuomintang (KMT), still formally supports the Republic of China's sovereignty over the whole of China. When in power over the last few decades, it has generally sought to defuse tensions with the People's Republic of China, however, and build economic and social ties with the mainland.
International recognition of Taiwan

Only 12 nations recognise Taiwan as a state and have formal diplomatic ties with it. The UK is part of the majority that do not. In recent years, the People's Republic of China has been putting countries that have diplomatic relations with Taiwan under greater pressure to break ties.

Countries and international organisations will often refer to Taiwan officially by the name of its capital, Taipei, or sometimes Chinese Taipei.
UK-Taiwan relations

The UK Government says the dispute between Taiwan and the People's Republic of China should be resolved "through dialogue, in line with the views of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait". It has no plans to recognise Taiwan as a state. The UK does support Taiwan's participation in international organisations as an observer.

The UK's diplomatic presence on the island is maintained through an outpost called the British Office Taipei.

Relations between the UK and Taiwan have strengthened over the last few years. Part of the reason is the UK's foreign policy aim to "tilt to the Indo-Pacific" set out in the 2021 Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy.

The UK has in recent years sent its warships on operations in the waters around Taiwan, which has angered China. The UK has, however, ruled out providing military assistance to Taiwan.

The issue on which the Taiwan and UK most regularly engage is trade, and the two sides have held annual ministerial trade talks since 1991. In July 2023, the UK Department for Business and Trade official talks on an Enhanced Trade Partnership would start "in due course". This will not be a full free trade agreement but will instead be supported by political agreements called 'memoranda of understanding'.

Starmer to require all UK adults to own government-issued digital ID

The prime minister is set to announce that all adults in the UK will be required to own a new form of government-issued digital ID.

It is understood that Sir Keir Starmer will set out the plans shortly.

The proposals are the government's latest bid to tackle illegal immigration, with the new ID being a form of proof of a citizen's right to live and work in the UK.

The so-called 'Brit card' will be subject to a consultation and would require legislation to be passed, before being rolled out.

Under the proposals, anybody starting a new job would be required to hold the digital ID, which could then be checked against a central database of those with the right to work in the UK.

At the moment, workers have to show at least one form of physical ID in the form of documents - but there are concerns within government that these can be faked.

Under the new system, immigration enforcement would be able to see which checks have been carried out and use it to track down those working illegally.

Starmer, a former human rights lawyer, is believed to have initially been sceptical of the scheme due to its restrictions on civil liberties.

But it is understood that he has been won over - and that Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is also supportive of the scheme.

In July, Labour peer Harriet Harman told Sky News that the black economy and ID cards would "make it more difficult for people to work illegally".

French President Emmanuel Macron has repeatedly warned that the lack of ID cards in the UK acts as a major incentive - a pull factor for Channel crossings -  as migrants feel they are able to find work in the black economy.
